2020 Tesla Model Y

Elon Musk unveiled Tesla’s newest production car, the Model Y, at the Tesla Design Center in Hawthorne, California.

The small SUV will get a range of up to 300 miles and a zero-to-60-mph time of as low as 3.5 seconds. The 2020 Tesla Model Y looks very similar to the compact Model 3 sedan, but can be outfitted with a third row of seats for a total seating capacity of seven.

CEO Musk told automotive analysts during its latest earnings call that the Model Y upgrade would give the new SUV 4.1 miles per kilowatt hour, or “by far the highest energy efficiency of any electric SUV ever produced.” Tesla also was making improvements on its electric-vehicle powertrain, including the motors on each wheel, he said.

Model Y comes with 20-inch wheels, a lowered suspension, a higher top speed (150 mph). The Model Y won’t come with the larger Model X crossover’s complicated Falcon Wing doors, but its interior looks to be mostly carryover from the Model 3 sedan. Like that car, everything from speedometer to the climate control, every function is managed through the large, slim central display.. An all-glass roof lends an airy ambience to the cabin but will be heavily tinted to avoid roasting occupants in Sun Belt states. The optional third row of seats will reportedly cost $3000 and won’t be available until later in the Model Y’s production cycle.

Model Y

Tesla is known for its very advanced Autopilot semi-autonomous driving system and the Model Y will offer the feature as standard, at least on the Long Range and Performance models. Even more advanced features such as a self-parking feature and a Summon feature will be optional. Key safety features include:

  • Standard automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection
  • Standard lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist
  • Standard adaptive cruise control with semi-autonomous driving mode
