The 2021 EQS is an all-new, all-electric sedan from Mercedes-Benz. Billed as the flagship for the company’s EQ subbrand, it’ll follow the EQC crossover as the brand’s second model.

As Mercedes-Benz said: the VISION EQS show car is an outlook on the future of Mercedes-Benz. Because two things are timeless: the need for mobility and the need for luxury. Plus an inner uncertainty about what will come next.

A pair of electric motors are expected to power the 2021 EQS, which in turn translates to all-wheel drive. While its official power output hasn’t been confirmed, the Vision EQS concept had a combined 469 horsepower and 560 lb-ft of torque.

The electric drivecould enable the AMG EQS to drop below four-second in the 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) acceleration. Its large 100-kWh lithium-ion battery pack mounted within the floor should have enough power for a WLTP-certified range of 430 miles (692 kilometers) between charges. But more realistic figure would be 320 miles (515 km). Fast-charging capabilities (350 kW) will allow an 80-percent recharge in just 20 minutes.

The cabin will be fitted with high-quality materials and countless luxury amenities. Cargo space should be especially generous, thanks to its large hatchback and useful front trunk. The ambient lighting is supposed to communicate with your primal subconscious. So, if the interior is warm, the car will radiate red light. Turn the air-con down low and it’ll sparkle an icy blue. The massive central infotainment screen is similar to the one in the Tesla Model S. But Mercedes has gone further and given each occupant their own infotainment screen integrated into the door armrests.

You can expect to hear more from the Mercedes EQS in 2020 in the form of closer-to-production-ready show cars, with the finished article in showrooms by 2021 carrying a starting price of around £80,000.
