2021 McLaren Elva

McLaren introduced the latest Ultimate Series model, an open-cockpit roadster called the Elva.

The name comes from an M1A race car designed by Bruce McLaren back in the 1960s and the Elva sports some styling cues that give a nod to the original design.

Since there’s no windscreen, there is McLaren’s AAMS (Active Air Management System), a pop-up vent system that sucks air through the lower fascia then bends it 130 degrees through a series of vanes before releasing it over your head. The idea is to create an air curtain that acts as a virtual windscreen.

The Elva features classic roadster proportions with a low front end and flowing fenders. At the back, two large buttresses give off a racing vibe without hindering outward visibility thanks to a deployable roll-over protection system.

The interior is almost like formula, the best McLaren’s ever done: design, materials, wow factor, and execution. Eight-inch central touchscreen dominates the interior, though the Elva does not have an audio system as standard to save weight (but it can be added for a fee). Based on what we can tell from photos, the Elva will have far less storage space than other McLaren models, forcing drivers to pay more attention to what’s ahead on the road.

Powered by twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8 that produces 804 horsepower and 590 lb-ft of torque. The engine hooks up to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission that powers the rear wheels. McLaren claims the Elva will accelerate from zero to 62 mph in less than three seconds and from zero to 124 mph in just 6.7 seconds. For added context, that latter number makes the Elva quicker than the track-focused Senna. The Elva also is reported to be the company’s lightest road car ever.

Only 399 examples of the Elva will be built, pricing starts at $1.83 million (£1,425,000 ). McLaren will offer the Elva with a fixed windshield option, which will make it street-legal in the United States.
