Ford unveils electric Mustang Mach-E race car with 1,400 horsepower.

1,400 horsepower, 7 electric drive motors, 2,300 pounds of downforce at 160 mph, and an 800-volt, 56.8-kWh battery pack capable of recuperating up to 80% of its charge capacity in just an hour.

Ford Motor has developed a racing version of its upcoming all-electric Mustang Mach-E crossover with 1,400 horsepower and a top speed that’s not street legal.

The Mach-E 1400’s prominent aero pieces—splitter and dive planes up front, wing and diffuser at the rear—generate about 2300 pounds of downforce at 160 mph, and the car is set up to be aerodynamically stable even when it’s sideways. The wing is carbon fiber, but the hood is a composite based on woven flax.

The company plans to use the prototype vehicle, which it’s calling the Mustang Mach-E 1400, to show off the potential performance of all-electric vehicles as the new crossover begins arriving in dealerships later this year.

The Mustang Mach-E 1400 used the body of the production vehicle but its components are quite different than the one for consumers. Engineers optimized the crossover’s aerodynamics, chassis and other systems to boost the performance.
