This 1986 Gemballa Avalanche Is a Vintage Collector’s Dream.

To be auctioned soon at RM Sotheby’s is the 1986 Gemballa Avalanche — the car that put German car manufacturer Gemballa on the world stage for outrageous bespoke cars, costing over $500,000 USD a piece during the 1980s.

Founded by Uwe Gemballa in 1981, the German company was based near Porsche in Leonberg, Germany – just west of Stuttgart. Since its inception, Gemballa has been renowned for their outlandish styling and performance figures that outpaced even the quickest factory vehicles being sold by Porsche.

The Porsche 930 was already one of the best high-performance sports cars of the 1980s before aftermarket tuners Gemballa and RUF decided to take a crack at making it even better.

Made in Pearlescent White over a black leather interior, this ultra-rare left-hand-drive Gemballa Avalanche was first delivered to a dealer in Puerto Rico in 1986. With Ruf’s 375-horsepower twin-turbo engine, five-speed dog-leg gearbox, and dual-exhaust system, this slantnose is one potent 930, featuring 17-inch HRE wheels, a power sunroof, air-conditioning and an Alpine hi-fi system.

The interior is decked out with white dials, black leather sports seats, an electric sunroof and windows, and air conditioning. There’s even a Cobra alarm system and an Alpine tuner CD player complete with a digital amplifier.

Vendor Coys of London believes no more than fifteen of these Avalanches were made, with this car representing a rare combination of Gemballa’s unmistakable lines and Ruf’s proven turbo performance.
